Escanaba police collecting food for the hungry

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Public Safety Department is doing what it can to keep shelves stocked at Delta County food banks.

The department is holding a food drive Wednesday at Elmer’s Country Market on North Lincoln Road in Escanaba.

Detective/Sergeant Anthony LaPlant says food pantries get most of their donations during the winter holiday months, which creates bare cupboards in warmer months.

“I think people donate more during those times,” he says.  “I think it declines in summer and I think the need goes up in summer.  So that’s why we decided to do it now.”

Suggested donation items include canned fruits, vegetables, and soup; pasta, cereal, and peanut butter; and formula, infant cereal and granola bars.

The food drive will take place from 3 to 8:30 p.m. at Elmer’s Country Market.  From 6:30 to 8:30 Green Bay Packers offensive guard Don Barclay will be signing autographs in exchange for a non-perishable food item or cash donation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
