Wolf in Chippewa County kills dog

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI (AP)--   Officials say a dog has died following a wolf attack in the Eastern U.P., bringing the total number of dogs killed in recent days to five.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the attack happened Wednesday and killed a beagle in Chippewa County.

Earlier, the DNR said four hunting dogs had died after two separate wolf attack.  Those were reported early last week in Schoolcraft and Delta Counties.  To date, the DNR says there have been 16 wolf attacks on dogs or livestock this year.

The attacks come ahead of debate in Lansing about wolf hunting.  The Michigan Legislature could move as early as this week to pass a pro-hunting law designed to make moot two statewide referendums in November that would stop state-sanctioned wolf hunts.
