HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI (AP)--   A Michigan Technological University professor has taught young technicians about the impact of historical mining on Torch Lake by taking an excursion there.

Environmental engineering professor Noel Urban and plant technicians from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Natural Resources Department took the trip to the Houghton County lake.

The trip was on the college's research vessel Agassiz. It was part of the General Motors-sponsored Ride the Waves education initiative. The program is generally targeted at younger students in grades 4 to 12. It offers hands-on, aquatically focused environmental education.
