DETROIT, MI (AP)-- Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has issued a disaster declaration for three Detroit-area counties struggling to recover from widespread flooding caused by record-setting rainfall two days earlier.
Snyder on Wednesday declared a disaster for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and tells The Associated Press he's working with Michigan's Congressional delegation for federal help.
The declaration also frees up more state resources and funds for manpower.
Snyder says most of the expressways that closed because of the flooding now are open again. He says Interstate 75 between I-696 and Eight Mile Road is the only stretch of freeway still closed due to flooding.
Authorities say two women died as a result of Monday's storms, including a 100-year-old found in her basement and a 30-year-old who had a seizure in her flooded car.
