Governor announces new veterans' services lines

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)--   The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency has launched a partnership with the 211 system so vets can get help accessing benefit programs, state services and other resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Governor Rick Snyder and the agency's director formally announced the new Veteran Resource Service Center on Wednesday. Veterans needing help navigating federal or state programs can call 1-800-MICH-VET during business hours and 211 afterward and during the weekend.

Snyder calls it a "cutting-edge" way to help veterans get the benefits they deserve.

He created the veterans affairs office last year because Michigan ranks last among the states in federal money spent per person on services provided through the U.S. Veterans Administration - medical treatment, pensions, schooling, disability compensation and employment assistance.
