New MI plate easier to see

michigan.org

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A Michigan license plate that was once voted the world's best has been revamped after police complained it wasn't visible enough.

Michael Yott, Jr. of the St. Clair Shores Police collected more than 700 signatures on an online petition to replace the plates. He tells MLive.com that he wanted to license plates to be removed because they had a very low roadway visibility. He says plates are sometimes the best way for police to identify suspects who are on the move.

The old plates featured the Mackinac Bridge against a bright orange sunset with white letters. The redesigned plates have a more subtle yellow-orange background with black letters.

Secretary of State spokesman Fred Woodhams says the new design is easier to read in all conditions, especially at night.
