ONTONAGON, Mich. (AP) — A hiker lost in the northern Upper Peninsula has been rescued after flagging down a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter with a flashlight.
The helicopter crew from Traverse City retrieved the missing hiker from the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park near Ontonagon on Saturday.
The Coast Guard says the 55-year-old man was reported overdue from a hike at about 10:30 p.m. after missing a planned trailhead meeting with his wife at 6 p.m. She had last seen him at noon.
The helicopter crew saw the man's fire and flashlight signals and hoisted him aboard. He wasn't injured.
They Coast Guard didn't release his identity but says he is local to the area.
