LANSING, MI (AP)-- A national report is calling for policies that help children by making it easier for low-income parents to earn higher wages.
The KIDS COUNT policy report released Wednesday says Michigan's earned income tax credit should be expanded, college financial aid restored to older adults and child care subsidies improved for working families with low incomes.
The "Creating Opportunity for Families: A Two-Generation Approach" is prepared by the Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Kids Count in Michigan Project Director Jane Zehnder-Merrell at the Michigan League for Public Policy says the report "calls for an approach that looks at the whole family."
The organization says more than 500,000 Michigan children up to age eight are in 4-member families that earn less than $47,000 per year.
