Senate passes child seat update

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Michigan Senate has voted to update rules for how children should be buckled up.

Michigan requires drivers to secure children under age 4 in safety seats in the back seat. Children are buckled in booster seats until they're 8 years old or 4-feet-9 inches tall.

The Senate sent the House legislation Thursday bringing Michigan's standards in line with recommendations from pediatricians and the federal government.

Children under 2 or who weigh less than 30 pounds would have to be in rear-facing safety seats. Those age 2 to 4 or between 30 and 50 pounds would be in forward-facing safety seats.

Children under 4 feet 9 inches and at least 50 pounds, or age 5 to 9, would be in boosters.
