Presque Isle plant powering mines again

marquettemagazine.com

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Empire and Tilden mines in Marquette County are once again purchasing their electricity from WE Energies Presque Isle Power Plant.

The mines filed a motion with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to remove the System Support Resource agreement, which would have U.P. utilities paying a lot more money to keep the plant open.

The Tilden and Empire returned to WE Energies February 1.

Under a January proposal Upper Peninsula Power Company will purchase the plant from WE Energies.  The mines will continue to buy their electricity from Presque Isle until it closes in 2020.

FERC has until February 27 to issue a decision related to several dockets pending since last year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
