Detroit to celebrate Marinette Marine LCS

wikipedia.com

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Fundraising efforts are kicking off for those planning a commissioning ceremony for a U.S. Navy warship named after Michigan's largest city.

The future USS Detroit was christened in October on the Menominee River at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin.  The ship will continue to undergo outfitting and testing before delivery to the Navy.  Its home port will be San Diego.

Commissioning week events are planned in Detroit in the spring of 2016.  Barbara Levin, the wife of former U.S. Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, is the ship's sponsor.

Lockheed Martin says the ship is capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots and can operate in water less than 20 feet deep.
