FutureMark ceases operations in Manistique

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The Manistique paper mill is closing.

FutureMarkManistique officials say the mill needs a lot more money than it’s making to turn things around, and closure is slated for March 24.  They say the mill is already on the market.  Around 147 jobs will be affected.

The mill declared bankruptcy in 2012 but was unable to return to profitability.  That and the changing paper market led to its demise.

Officials say they’ve pursued every option to keep the mill open, including an outright sale to a new owner, but nothing could happen in the time frame needed to keep the plant running.

A crew will remain at the mill to fulfill immediate orders, shut down operations, and support customers through the transition.
