Marquette Police talk down suicidal man

MARQUETTE, MI--   A suicidal man engaged Marquette officers in a standoff for more than five hours

Tuesday.

City Police were called around 4:18 a.m. to the 2300 block of Presque Isle Avenue on a report the subject was alone and had discharged a firearm.  The man’s girlfriend had left before the police were notified.

Police say the subject initially refused to communicate with officers at the scene, but after several phone calls the man was convinced to surrender himself at 9:38 a.m.  He was taken to U.P. Health System Marquette for evaluation.

The Marquette City Fire Department, Michigan State Police, and NMU Public Safety assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
