Manistique home succumbs to fire

MANISTIQUE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Manistique house has been destroyed by fire.

Department of Public Safety officials were called Monday around 3:10 p.m. to

6631 US-2 in Manistique Township and found the two-story structure fully engulfed.

Firefighters requested assistance from Doyle, Thompson and Hiawatha Township fire departments.  The highway was shut down for several hours to allow fire tankers free access to bring water to the scene.

The home—owned by Jason and Tricia McEvers—was unoccupied at the time.  No injuries are reported, but the family cat is believed to have died in the fire.

The house is considered to be a total loss.

The fire started in the garage.  Its cause remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
