MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette law enforcement agencies are gathering Monday to help launch a statewide seat belt usage initiative.

Officials from the Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, and the Michigan Department of Transportation will be at the Marquette Welcome Center Monday at 10 a.m. to promote the annual Click It or Ticket campaign.

Officials are conducting federally funded safety belt enforcement zones across Michigan through the Memorial Day travel weekend.

Last year seat belt use was at 93 percent, but despite that nearly half of vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes are unbuckled.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
