Escanaba fire evacuates apartment building

ESCANABA, MI--   Fire in an Escanaba building drove residents out of their apartments early Sunday morning.

Around 4:50 a.m. Public Safety officers were called to 1900 Ludington Street and saw heavy smoke coming from the entry door.  Tenants who were outside the building said the fire was in the laundry room.  Officers found a dryer on fire and extinguished the flames quickly, but the building was filled with heavy smoke and had to be evacuated.  Some upstairs tenants had to be helped out of their windows and down ladders to safety.

Officers say the fire was contained to the laundry room.  The building suffered fire and smoke damage, but no injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Rampart, City Electric, DTE, and the Red Cross.
