Officials locate missing Gwinn kayakers

GWINN, MI--   Two kayakers reported missing early Thursday morning have been found safe.

Around 3 a.m. the Forsyth Township Police Department received a report that a 19-year-old man and 26-year-old woman had not reached their destination.  They were last seen Wednesday leaving Gwinn from the Nordeen Park access and were traveling the Escanaba River to the Rock area.

The pair was located around 7:00 Thursday morning and are reported to be in good health.  They had walked to a cabin and sought shelter until rescuers arrived.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations team, Michigan State Police, Delta County Search and Rescue, and Valley Med Life Flight assisted in the search.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
