LEELANAU COUNTY, MI (AP)--   Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has added Leelanau County to an earlier disaster declaration for neighboring Grand Traverse County, making state aid available to help with recovery from severe thunderstorms this month.

Snyder directed the Michigan State Police on Saturday to amend the disaster declaration. Storms packing high winds swept through northern Michigan on Aug. 2, damaging homes and public facilities. The storms also uprooted trees, snapped branches and caused other damage at some of the state's most popular tourist spots.

Both counties issued local states of emergency and requested disaster declarations from Snyder.

The governor's declaration authorizes the state police's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division to coordinate state response and recovery efforts.
