LANSING, MI-- Michigan has sent 17 firefighters to help battle wildfires in California, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon.
Seven of the Department of Natural Resources firefighters are from the U.P. Six personnel will man two fire engines, which were sent to Montana on Tuesday. The firefighters will serve as part of incident management teams, including fire line management, public information officers, and heavy equipment bosses and operators.
DNR officials say while the firefighters serve out west, Michigan remains staffed should a wildfire start in the state.
In July the DNR sent 14 firefighters to Alaska and Manitoba, Canada to aid in wildfire suppression efforts there.
