Missing Illinois hiker, 71, found alive in UP

WATERSMEET TOWNSHIP, MI--   A missing hiker from Illinois has been found in a wooded area in Gogebic County.

The Gogebic County Sheriff's Office says John Niesman, 71, was "somewhat dehydrated" after being located in the Imp Lake area of Watersmeet Township.  He was hospitalized for evaluation.

The Homer Glen resident was last seen Saturday at the Bel Air Motel in Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin. A jogger discovered his white SUV Wednesday night just east of Watersmeet.

Family members had said Niesman, who's known as "Wolverine Jack," goes on hiking trips in the U.P. twice a year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
