Oldest VFW in the state celebrates birthday

ISHPEMING, MI--   Ishpeming’s VFW post celebrated its 70th anniversary over the weekend. 

Post 4573 was established on October 18, 1945 and is the oldest post in Michigan.  The Women’s Auxiliary was formed in 1946. 

On Saturday the post was presented with certificates recognizing its longevity and achievements.  Attending were the State Commander of the VFW, Representative John Kivela, and officials from the offices of Senator Debbie Stabenow, Congressman Dan Benishek, and State Senator Tom Casperson.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
