Hikers lost on Hogsback found

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Three hikers had to call 911 when they got lost hiking in Marquette Township Monday.  

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue was dispatched to Hogsback Mountain around 7:30 p.m.  Three sisters, Maria Kuopus, 20, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Bridgette Kuopus, 20, of Ishpeming, and Anna Kuopus, 14, of Ishpeming had been hiking in the area when they lost their way.  They built a fire, called 911, and waited for searchers to arrive.

Officials were able to use the GPS location from the call to locate the sisters.  They were found in good health and escorted back to their vehicle without incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
