HANCOCK, MI (AP)-- Installation of solar panels is expected to reduce electric costs for the Quincy Mine Hoist in the Keweenaw National Historical Park.
The Daily Mining Gazette reports that funding for the two-panel solar array north of Hancock came from the National Park Service through the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The money came from $35,000 in a lawsuit settlement from Wisconsin Public Energy for a violation of the Clean Air Act.
The solar panels were installed last summer and put into operation in October on the property of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. It will be used to power the lighting for a section of the shaft shown during tours.
