Initiative to increase food bank donations begins

COMSTOCK PARK, MI--   Feeding America West Michigan is partnering with Wal-Mart in a new campaign to help feed hungry residents across the state.

Communications Specialist Andrew Steiner says the Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign allows shoppers to donate a small amount of money at the checkout.  The donations will be dispersed to food banks that serve those communities.

Steiner says Feeding America West Michigan is currently distributing 15.2 percent more food in the state than a year ago.  He says although the economy is better and many people are back to work, not a lot of people have found jobs that can support their needs.

“This is a major problem, not just in Michigan but across the country, where people are working but the wages that they’re making just simply don’t cover their needs,” he says.

Steiner says Feeding America West Michigan’s goal is to increase amount of food available in the U.P. by 50 percent this year.

The campaign runs from March 28 to April 25.
