Thunderstorms prompt tornado warning for Central U.P.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Parts of Baraga and Marquette counties were on lockdown Tuesday afternoon, after a tornado warning was issued for the region.

Around 2:30 p.m. the National Weather Service said rotation was detected in a severe thunderstorm near Lake Michigamme, west of Ishpeming.  It produced heavy rain and quarter-sized hail.

Employees at area businesses were sent to basements and schools went on lockdown to keep kids who would have been homebound on buses inside.

All warnings were canceled by 3:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service says it’s investigating a possible tornado touchdown around 2:20 p.m. in Western Marquette County.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
