Tornadoes touch down in Marquette County

MARQUETTE, MI--   The National Weather Service has confirmed that two separate tornadoes touched down in Western Marquette County Tuesday.  

The first tornado touched down near the Marquette/Baraga County border, then traveled ENE across River Road before lifting west of M-95 near Republic. Damage included snapped White Pine trees 12 to 18 inches in diameter. 

The second tornado touched down near CR 476 just south of the Greenwood Reservoir, traveled east, then lifted around CR 581. Various downed and snapped trees were observed along that track.

The warning was issued around 2:30 p.m. when rotation was detected in a severe thunderstorm west of Ishpeming.  Area schools and businesses were locked down and people waited in basements until the severe weather passed.
