Success on opening day

MARQUETTE, MI--   Several hunters made friends with Lady Luck on the opening day of the firearm deer season.

Officials with the Department of Natural Resources say Jake Pettit of Van Buren, Missouri was the first hunter to check a deer at the Marquette check station Tuesday.  He shot the six-point, 130-pound buck in Marquette County.

But Mark Simon of Menominee got the buck of his dreams.  He shot a ten-point, 165-pound whitetail, also in Marquette County.

Officials say the deer check station on opening day is typically slow.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
