KBIC gives to the community

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has released a list of recipients of its 2 percent distributions and 8 percent payments.

The biannual payments come from slot machine proceeds from the Tribe’s casinos and Baraga and Marquette.  Two percent of the proceeds go to local units of government, while 8 percent is given to the state of Michigan.

From April through September $134,608.61 in funding from the Baraga Casino was distributed to entities including Baraga County and its schools, L’Anse Township and L’Anse Area Schools, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Distributions totaling $172,572.67 from the Ojibwa Casino-Marquette were given to groups like the Beacon House, Chocolay Township Police and Fire Departments, the Marquette County Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Coalition, and Marquette Area Public Schools.

Tribal officials say 8 percent payments totaling more than $1.2 million were made to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
