UPDATE: UPPCO continues power restoration efforts

UPDATE, 5:30 pm:  As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday an estimated 1,000 UPPCO customers remain without power.

Some of the major areas without power in Marquette County include Republic, Ishpeming, Cooper Lake Road and U.S. 41 west of Ishpeming. There are a handful of customers without power around Iron River.

Officials hope to have power restored to most customers by late Tuesday evening.

ISHPEMING, MI--   Cleanup of areas in Marquette and Iron counties hit by a severe thunderstorm continues Tuesday, piles of snow notwithstanding.

The National Weather Service office in Negaunee Township says winds up to 80 mph were clocked in Republic and Ishpeming Monday morning.  Officials determined straight-line winds knocked down trees and utility poles and ripped up roofs—not a tornado.

About 2,400 UPPCO customers remained without power as of 5:00 Tuesday morning—the largest concentration in the Ishpeming area. UPPCO says crews have encountered many power poles broken by falling trees and limbs.

The Ishpeming Salvation Army opened as a warming center and overnight shelter for residents Monday night.

UPPCO says all hands are on deck and officials hope to have power restored to most customers by late Tuesday.
