Volunteers needed for homeless count in three counties

MARQUETTE, MI--   Community Action Alger-Marquette is looking for volunteers to count people who are homeless at the end of the month.

Every January continuums of care across the nation measure the number of homeless in shelters and on the streets at a single point in time. The Point-In-Time count for Marquette, Alger, and Schoolcraft counties will be conducted on the 31st from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Those who are homeless or are “couch surfing” are asked to attend a community lunch in their area to be included.

Officials say an accurate count is critical to securing funding and for agencies to develop a response.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Jason Parks at 228-6522, extension 236 or email jparks@communityactionam.org.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
