Police report number of Memorial Day weekend traffic deaths

LANSING, MI--   Preliminary reports indicate 15 people lost their lives in 11 separate traffic crashes during the 2018 Memorial Day holiday weekend.

In comparison, 10 people were killed in 10 traffic crashes the same time last year.

Of the 15 crashes: seat belts were not used in one and unknown in four; alcohol was a known factor in two of the crashes; one victim was a pedestrian; and five involved motorcycles. A helmet was worn in two and it’s unknown if one was used in three of the crashes.

The 2018 Memorial Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday through 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
