U.P. jobless rate stable

MARQUETTE, MI--   The U.P. unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent in June. 

That compares favorably to a 0.5 percent increase statewide during the month.

Ten Upper Peninsula counties recorded declines in their unemployment rates, ranging from 0.1 percent in Chippewa, Gogebic and Schoolcraft counties to 1.5 percentage points in Alger and Ontonagon counties. 

Five counties reported modest increases in the percent jobless, from a tenth of a percentage point in Houghton and Dickinson counties to 0.3 percentage points in Marquette County.

Mackinac County tied with Kent and Livingston counties for the second-lowest June unemployment rate in the state at 3.3 percent. Ontonagon County had the highest June jobless rate in Michigan at 7.9 percent.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
