Heavy snow collapses area roofs

MARQUETTE, MI--   This weekend’s blizzard did more than just dampen spirits around the region. The immense weight of snow that fell caved in more than one roof.

WLUC-TV says Sunday morning the roof at the back of the Shunk Furniture building in Negaunee Township collapsed. The force of the fall blew out windows in the front of the store and ripped gas pipes off the building. The inside of the store was exposed to the elements.

The roof at Old Ish Auto in Ishpeming caved in early Sunday morning.

And the roof at the Negaunee Public Schools bus garage collapsed, also early Sunday morning. That broke the sprinkler system and sent water onto US-41 in front of the garage.

Negaunee schools are closed Monday because of a previously scheduled day off.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
