LANSING, MI-- The Michigan Public Service Commission is urging propane customers to shop now for the best prices.
Officials say summer is the best time for customers to lock in fuel prices for the winter, before the weather turns cold and demand heats up.
The MPSC says when shopping for propane, consumers should think about five things: budget, pre-pay and fixed-price plans can save money compared to buying at market price; ask about fees and other charges, such as those for installation; be aware the price per gallon may go up after the prepaid allotment is used up; decide whether it’s best to rent, lease or own the propane tank; and understand the contract before signing.
Michigan leads the nation in total residential propane consumption. Eighteen percent of Upper Peninsula residents and nearly 24 percent of those living in the northern Lower Peninsula rely on propane as a primary heating source.
