ESCANABA TOWNSHIP, MI-- Upper Peninsula Power Company says it has entered into an agreement with Chandler Solar Project LLC to buy renewable energy to be generated by a new solar farm in Escanaba Township.
UPPCO officials say the 125-megawatt facility is expected to create more than 200 construction jobs and pay more than $10 million in property taxes. Vice President of Communications and Business Development, Brett French, says Delta County has reduced cloud cover, low average humidity and long summer days, making it a great location for the production of solar energy.
French says when added to UPPCO’s hydroelectric generation, the solar project will increase the amount of renewable energy being delivered to customers to more than 50 percent of their total consumption by the end of 2022.
Officials say the project is expected to save customers more than $20 million in energy costs over the next 25 years.
