Electrical issues likely to blame for Manistique house fire

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Fire has severely damaged a house in Manistique Township.

Monday around 5 p.m. Manistique Public Safety and volunteer fire officers were dispatched to a house on Smith Lake Road, about 11 miles north of Manistique. Firefighters determined the fire had started in the wall of the laundry room and spread into the attic and an attached garage.

It took officers 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. They had to put out numerous hot spots and vent the roof to extinguish the fire.

Neither of the two occupants of the home was injured. The house suffered significant water, smoke, and fire damage.

Officials say the source of the fire was electrical in nature.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
