Work begins on Sugarloaf south parking lot

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   The construction of a new parking lot at Sugarloaf Mountain in Marquette Township has moved into the next phase.

County officials say creation of deceleration and bypass lanes on County Road 550 has begun. For the next couple of weeks construction will take place in the right of way and close to travel lanes.

The new parking lot, south of the existing lot, is expected to open in September. It will contain 100 parking spaces and will include spaces for large RVs and buses.

Improvements to the north lot will begin after the south lot opens.

The County Road 550 recreation corridor is experiencing a large volume of visitor and truck traffic. Officials are asking drivers to be alert when going through the area and to expect delays.
