Federal grants will help clean up from Father's Day floods, procure rescue vehicle

MARQUETTE, MI--   U.P. communities will benefit from USDA Rural Development grants.

Gogebic County’s Marenisco Township will use its grant to purchase a 4-wheel-drive rescue vehicle. It will be utilized by first responders for accidents and firefighters to access remote locations.

The Houghton County Road Commission will use part of its money to purchase a column vehicle lift to repair heavy equipment. Another part of the grant will go toward the purchase of a quad-axle truck to haul away debris from roads damaged in the 2018 flood. The rest of the funding will buy a truck equipped with a water tank steamer attachment. It will clear debris from plugged culverts and also frozen culverts in the spring.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
