Man killed while exploring Whitefish Point shipwreck

WHITEFISH POINT, MI--   A Wisconsin man has died while diving a shipwreck in Lake Superior about 16 miles off of Whitefish Point in Chippewa County.

State Police from the Newberry Post say the U.S. Coast Guard received a call Monday around 2:20 p.m. from the charter boat Blackdog.  The captain reported he had deployed four recreational divers on the shipwreck SS Samuel Mather, but only three resurfaced.

The Coast Guard requested the assistance of the Michigan State Police Underwater Recovery Unit, which recovered the body Tuesday from the ship’s deck in 174 feet of water.

The diver is identified as Derril Yerigan, 52, of New Richmond, Wisconsin.

The Chippewa County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.  Police say foul play is not suspected.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
