MDOT says watch for deer on roadways

LANSING, MI--   ‘Tis the season for vehicle-deer crashes.

That’s according to the Michigan Department of Transportation, which says October and November are prime months to see more deer by the roadside.

On average, 146 car-deer crashes happen every day in Michigan.  MDOT says there were more than 53,000 reported crashes last year, resulting in 1,464 injuries and eight deaths.

To avoid such crashes MODT officials say keep the following tips in mind:  watch for deer, especially at dawn and dusk; if you see one deer there are likely others behind it; and slow down when traveling through areas heavily populated by deer.

Officials also warn not to swerve when a deer is in your path, which could cause your vehicle to go off the road.  Come to a controlled stop, instead.
