NMU drowning victim identified

MARQUETTE, MI--

A Northern Michigan University student has drowned in the Physical Education Instructional Facility pool.

Officials say the accident happened Friday shortly before 6 p.m. as the soccer team was concluding a workout in the pool.

The student has been identified as 18-year-old freshman Arianna Alioto of  Columbia Missouri.  Alioto was red-shirted this year because of a knee injury, but was expected to challenge for a forward or midfield position next year.

No other details are available at this time.

Soccer coach Matt Granstrand says Alioto’s death is devastating.  He says, “Our team and our extended team family are in extreme pain.”

NMU’s Public Safety Department plans to release more details Monday morning.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
