Pelkie woman dies in Houghton County crash

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Baraga County woman is dead, following a two-vehicle crash in Houghton County’s Portage Township.

State Police from the Calumet Post say the accident happened Monday night around 6:30 on Askel Road.  Troopers say a vehicle driven by Rick VanAlstine, 52, of Pelkie apparently hit a deer, which caused VanAlstine to lose control and cross over into the other lane of traffic.  His vehicle hit another driven by Gloria Karinen, 65, also of Pelkie.

Karinen was pronounced dead at the scene.  VanAlstine was taken to Portage Health System, then transferred to Marquette General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
