Deputy hurt in two-vehicle Bessemer accident

BESSEMER, MI--   A Gogebic County Sheriff’s deputy was injured in a two-vehicle crash in Bessemer over the weekend.

Troopers from the Wakefield Post say the accident happened Saturday around 11:25 a.m. at the intersection of Peck Street and US-2.

They say Mary Strelcheck, 77, of Bessemer had stopped at a stop sign on Peck and, seeing no traffic, started to turn left.  A large snow bank along the highway had hidden an eastbound Sheriff’s Department patrol car, which struck Strelcheck’s vehicle.

The deputy was taken to Aspirus Grand View Hospital, treated, and released.  Strelcheck sought her own treatment.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
