Electricity back on in Houghton

HOUGHTON, MI--   Power has been restored to Houghton residents, after a car hit and brought down a power pole Monday.

The Houghton Police Department says a driver northbound on Portage Street around 7:30 a.m. lost control of their vehicle and slid into the path of another vehicle that was eastbound on Montezuma Avenue.  The impact sent the second vehicle into the pole, severing it and cutting off electricity to around 1,700 UPPCO customers.

Power wasn’t returned to most until about 10:30 a.m.  According to the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette crews had to wait until the accident was cleared, then had to deal with mine rock around the broken pole.  Most of the power load was then directed to another UPPCO substation.

Electricity was restored to all customers by Monday afternoon.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
