19-year-old crashes car into tree in Iron County

BATES TOWNSHIP, MI--   An Iron River man has been injured in a single-vehicle crash in Iron County.

Sheriff’s deputies say the accident happened Sunday around 6:45 a.m. on Sunset Shores Road in Bates Township.  They say an eastbound vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man went out of control and hit a tree.  The noise alerted residents in the area, who dialed 911.

The driver was taken to Northstar Hospital for treatment of facial and bone injuries.

Deputies believe intoxication and speed were factors in the crash.

The driver’s name is being withheld, pending blood evidence analysis and review by the Iron County Prosecutors’ Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
