Boy on moped struck near Iron Mountain

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Kingsford boy riding a moped was injured when he was hit by a vehicle in Breitung Township.

The crash happened Monday around 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of Breitung Avenue and Hydraulic Falls Road.  The 14-year-old driver of the moped was southbound when he failed to stop at the intersection and drove into the path of a westbound vehicle driven by a 60-year-old Cecil, Wisconsin woman.

The boy was ejected from the moped, which traveled across the eastbound lane and into the ditch.  He was wearing a helmet, which is credited with preventing more serious injury.

The boy was taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital for treatment.  The woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries due to airbag deployment.

The accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
