Snowmobile crash in Iron County injures man

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   An Arizona man was injured in a snowmobile accident in Iron County over the weekend.

Sheriff’s deputies say the accident happened Saturday around 2:30 p.m. just south of M-69 in Crystal Falls.  They say Gerard Schira, 54, of Chandler, Arizona was northbound on trail 113 when he lost control of his machine and struck a tree.

He was taken to Northstar Health System for treatment of a suspected broken leg.

Officials say speed was likely a factor in the crash.  They say he had not been drinking.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
