Officers release details of Friday's multiple crashes on US-2

GARDEN CORNERS, MI--   Several people were injured in a 16-vehicle accident that happened near Garden Corners last Friday morning.

Troopers from the Gladstone and St. Ignace posts and Delta County Sheriff’s deputies responded to US-2 just west of County Road 183 and encountered whiteout conditions.  They say at least three tractor trailers and 13 passenger cars were involved in the incident.

Officers say the accident began when an eastbound van rear-ended a tractor trailer, spun out, and was struck by another eastbound vehicle.  As passengers were getting out of the van it was hit by a tractor trailer, which threw the passengers into the air.  Numerous other vehicles collided with those in the eastbound lane or drove into the ditch to avoid the accident.

Troopers say three trucks were stopped in the westbound lane when a tractor trailer hit the last truck, sending it into a snow bank and causing a series of collisions.

At least seven people were taken to St. Francis, Schoolcraft Memorial and Marquette General hospitals.  Some had severe injuries, but none appeared life-threatening.

That portion of road was closed for about six hours as officials cleared the scene.
