Problems force Coast Guard helicopter to land on Washington Island

MLive.com

WASHINGTON ISLAND, WI (AP)--   The U.S. Coast Guard says a helicopter from its air station in Traverse City had flight control problems and made an emergency landing on Wisconsin's Washington Island.

The Coast Guard says the four crew members escaped injury in the landing. It says the crew of the Dolphin helicopter contacted the base about 8:30 a.m. Sunday to report the control problems.

The Coast Guard says the helicopter took off from Traverse City's Cherry Capital Airport and was about half an hour into its flight to the Iron Mountain Airport when the problem occurred.

Washington Island is in Lake Michigan, about 25 miles south of Escanaba.
