Marquette sailor towed on Lake Superior

MARQUETTE, MI--   A boater had to be rescued near Marquette’s Picnic Rocks Tuesday afternoon after his vessel lost power.

The man couldn’t control the sailboat, which was floating out into Lake Superior amid windy and choppy conditions.

Around 4 p.m. the boater sent up a flare after he lost radio contact with the U.S. Coast Guard.  The Coast Guard was able to find and tow the boat to its marina.

No injuries are reported.  The man was the only person on the boat.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
